FALSE
He came under false pretenses and left under false colors.
I knew him to be a fake when his pants revealed a false bottom.
He spoke in a falsetto, telling falsehoods. I supported him to save money,
a false economy. Between us a false start when he left at false dawn promising—
falsely—to return. A false alarm. The worst part was leaving his false teeth behind.
TERRORIST LOVE SONG
the terrorists come on terrorist trains
carrying terrorist attachè-cases
scan terrorist news for terrorist views
terrorist memos on terrorist demos
‘til it’s time to go home to terrorist wives
and terrorist kids then all go out
for terrorist ice-cream
THE FURIES
They squat my head playing
whack-a-mole, making me confess
my role as liar, denier, alibier.
Alecto (Alice) the Nagger,
Megaera (Meg) the Hater,
Tisiphone (Tess) the Avenger,
all my ex-es, they're on to me:
I never earned enough, lousy in bed,
slept with their best friends.
Vagina dentata, emasculators:
I entered like a ram, extracted
like a melted candle.
No, no, no. I did my best,
I only imagined lust,
swore to be good, it's just
no matter how hard I try,
truth is, there'll never be a truce—
they inhabit my dreams, my waking life,
the Furies am I.
THE NEXT-TO-LAST POLAR BEAR
scimitar claws clenching
the concrete parabola
circle left sway once
pad five steps nine
stop circle right
sway twice raise head
swill the dirty air stare
at taunting boys
