ART BY RED TWENY

1

Red Tweny was born in 1964 in Italy. In an attempt to foster his artistic abilities, his mother made him religiously attend all of the main contemporary art exhibitions that passed through Rome during the mid-1970’s. By age twelve, he was studying painting under the tutelage of an illustrator at Mary Mount College in Rome, the same university from which he graduated in 1984.

At age twenty, personal tragedy struck with the untimely passing of his father, who he found lifeless. This event deeply marked his psyche and has affected the style and subjects his artwork ever since.

Today Red’s art is characterized by an exaggerated use of black ink to create vivid impressions. He does not make use of subtext, but rather overtly throws the essence of his subjects in the forefront for all to see. This art/subjects centers around the futility of attempting to find meaning in a tangled existence. He frequently depicts subjects experiencing extreme emotions, which he likens to capturing the expressions of someone going through un-anesthetized surgery. His style is quite recognizable, reminiscent of the fears of our century and the uneasiness of our souls. He creates stark details of the shabby daily lives as opposed to the higher needs of the human soul, usually disappointed. The use of blacks and white negative space give the illusion of his subjects being frozen in space and time: this helps to accentuate the emotional message therein. A body’s tension as it convulses and ultimately crumbles becomes the epicenter of the image; there is nowhere for the viewer to look but straight into the abyss he has depicted.

Red Twenty still lives in Rome with his family.
