MERMAID DREAMS

What I wanted
was to shimmer.
Light on water,
salt upon blue rocks.
I wanted to halve
green waves
and move like a drunken sun.
Let the light fall, then,
I never fall.
Let the darkness sing,
and I will return the chorus.
Let all my beginnings circle
here to this edge,
a plume of Osage orange,
just beyond, and I, in conduit
of sea and light and waking.

THE EMPTY HEARSE

Let the carriage roll
through the streets of rain—
fallen petals and
flame-kites,
the only passengers.
A cross of roses
bears the name, Annie.
But there are more names
to be whispered,
amid horse-hooves
on cobblestones,
and tears shaded by
umbrellas.
No name unknown,
no flame unborn.

SACRAMENT OF SKIN

There's no accounting
for black horns,
or flames.
Dark love
always surfaces,
with false knowing.
I make no blemish
but I carry
my thorns,
and so bound
are my rose, and I.

THE POLAR NIGHT

I’ll mark it here;
fold us within
like Scott’s tent—
and we'll touch
hand, to hand,
in blue—
sleep is coming,
our breath
will wither.
In the deep fold
of the endless
sky of ice,
we will pray
and will not fail.
