Teresa Young started painted in oils at the age of eight and sold pastel and charcoal portraits from the age of fourteen. She used the profits from her portrait sales to fund private art lessons with two professional artists on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Their styles differed vastly; one was a realistic painter with a semi-tight style that concentrated on portraits as her main area of interest. The other artist painted in a vivid, complementary color-scheme style that was loose and vibrantly reminiscent of Tommy Thompson of the group of seven.

Teresa’s mature style integrates both approaches into itself in different ways. Other artists that she was very influenced by were H.R. Giger, Salvador Dali, Emily Carr and Gervaso Gallardo.

Another obvious aspect in her artwork is it’s similarity to aboriginal art. This had developed naturally as time went on and led her to question her own roots. Upon investigation, Teresa found that her great grandmother was a Cree Indian in Manitoba. What she found interesting is that she developed the style with no exposure to their art or culture which led her to believe that something like this could be in the blood somehow.
